The Shadows of Betrayal
The Shadows of Betrayal is set in Ireland during WWII, against the backdrop of national and international events. Although Ireland clings to its neutrality, the repercussions of war impinge on the country. Alongside stringent censorship there is rationing, blackout restrictions, smuggling and espionage. There are dissidents too who seek to collaborate with Nazi Germany. The story is centred around a sumptuous hotel known as Willington House, where rich English families seek refuge from the German bombs raining down on London.
Pearl Allen also flees home to Ireland to escape the war. She accepts a job as events manager in the hotel, and soon falls in love with the debonair Edward Maloney, American owner of the hotel. Her feelings are reciprocated — but a cruel poison-pen letter drives them apart. Then Edward is kidnapped, and Pearl finds herself caught up in an atmosphere of suspicion and violence.
